Energy efficiency is definitely not a new idea; our moms have been telling us to turn the lights off when we leave the room for decades. So understanding that leaving sources of electricity on results in higher electric bills is fairly basic.
If it’s so basic, then, why do many of us balk at the idea of becoming more energy efficient? Maybe we’re thinking, “Well, my bill isn’t THAT high…it’s definitely lower than my neighbor’s bill, so it’s not a problem.” Or maybe, “But those new light bulbs are so expensive, and/or I don’t want anyone drilling holes in my walls and blowing insulation everywhere. What if we inhaled some? Isn’t that dangerous?”
Regardless of our excuses why becoming more energy efficient can wait, the point remains that they are still just that
excuses. Here are five reasons why you should stop waiting and become more energy efficient right now.
Because your electric rate is not going to decrease. Ever. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the annual average rate increase in Missouri is 6.7%. You may not notice the hit much in a year…but add another year to it, and more rate increases, and all of a sudden you’re trying to figure out why you’re paying another 50 dollars a month for the same usage.
Because you’re busy. You have a million things going on, and at least half of them have to be handled today. Isn’t it nice to find things like LED bulbs with multi-year guarantees on their longevity? That’s not even counting the fact that you’re not going to burn yourself on an LED bulb, or the extra fact when your light bulb temperature doesn’t increase, your air conditioner doesn’t have to work harder to combat that extra heat. We’re just saying that it is nice not to have to replace stuff so often. Aren’t the long-term benefits far better than that initial cost to purchase the bulbs?
Because you’re helping more than just yourself. Sure, you may choose to become more energy efficient to save money, but you’re also benefiting the planet by doing your part to conserve resources. Ever read the story about the boy throwing starfish back into the ocean, one at a time? You should read it.
Because you’re also helping yourself. The fact is, an energy efficient home is just more comfortable. You’re cozier in the winter, cooler in the summer, and all of that ideal climate adjustment is even sweeter when you realize just a few extra measures in your home equaled no more drafts or warped windows.
Because all of the above. Even minor adjustments, such as sealing windows for the winter or converting to one LED bulb at a time, make a difference. For minimal overall cost, you gain comfort, save money, help the planet, and have extra time to do that stuff you really needed to get done yesterday.
